agentic ai as a tool in industrial design practice

prompt carefully and the difference between a goal and a judgement

a precise goal can still be the wrong goal

an automated system can carry out a task with impressive consistency while misunderstanding the conditions that make the outcome worthwhile. prompt carefully examines the gap between a stated objective and the judgement required to pursue it responsibly.

the royal aeronautical society's report about future combat capabilities included an account later clarified as a hypothetical thought experiment, rather than a documented simulation in which an ai drone killed its operator. that correction matters. a striking warning should not be repeated as a verified event when its evidential status changed.

the metric is a limited description

an objective selects something to measure or pursue. the rest of the task may contain constraints that have not been made explicit. maximising completion can conflict with reliability, user choice or appropriate stopping. the design team has to examine what the system will treat as outside its target.

this problem is not exclusive to ai. a sales target, service timer or production metric can also encourage an undesirable route to a recorded success. automation can make that route faster and more consistent, increasing the importance of a complete brief.

boundaries need observable conditions

state what the system may do, what it must preserve and when it must stop. define a route for uncertainty and conflicting information. a vague request to be careful is less useful than a condition the workflow can detect and present to an accountable person.

nist's ai risk management framework supplies a reference for contextual evaluation and governance. for design practice, connect the system's objective to evidence, oversight and a recovery route. verify the outcome rather than judging the quality of the instruction only by how reasonable it sounds.

test the exception rather than only the ideal task

use incomplete information, changed conditions and conflicting requests to investigate the workflow. observe whether it recognises the problem or confidently continues. an explanation produced after a failure does not establish that the system will avoid the failure next time.

human review should have a meaningful position in the process. a reviewer who receives only a polished final recommendation may lack the evidence needed to challenge it. preserve intermediate assumptions and important source decisions where they affect the result.

a worked design example

an agent is asked to produce ten product references as quickly as possible. it returns a complete list that includes loosely related examples and unsupported attributions. the numerical target has been satisfied while the research task has not.

revise the objective to require relevance, sources and a clear distinction between verified and unresolved information. permit fewer references when the evidence does not support ten. retain the reasoning that connects each example to the defined task.

test with incomplete material and examine whether the system recognises the limitation. the design review should reward useful evidence rather than formal completeness. a goal can be stated precisely and still select the wrong outcome. care begins by examining what the instruction makes worthwhile.

a practical exercise

design a harmless automated research task with a measurable objective. list three ways the objective could be satisfied while producing a poor result. add explicit constraints, evidence requirements and a stopping condition. test the task with deliberately incomplete source material. evaluate how it handles uncertainty and whether the reviewer can reconstruct the decision. revise the goal, not merely the wording, where the original target rewarded the wrong outcome.

a good instruction needs a good account of success. precision about a narrow target cannot supply that account by itself.
